Original Screenplays

Tagged by @moviemusings on Instgram to vote for my favourite Original Screenplay. Your choices are pretty superb, Birdman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Her and Lost in Translation are also some of my favourites.
I found this so hard to pin down to just one choice, but I kept coming back to Donnie Darko (2001).
This script is original through and through. Set in the 80s, it focuses on a teenage boy Donnie, (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who has a whole lot of issues. He is painfully smart, but he is also very troubled with visions and mental health problems.
One night, he meets a giant bunny rabbit called Frank, who warns him that the world will soon come to an end. This same night that he was away from home, Donnie avoided a freakish accident that would have killed him - a jet engine fell in his room. Frank begins to persuade Donnie to commit crimes which not only isolates him further from his family but makes him increasingly dangerous. Donnie also falls for the new girl, Gretchen at school, their meeting feels like fate instantly. With more and more trips to his therapist, a run in with a local self help promoter, and plenty of hormones, Donnie is trying to find his place in the world, what is the meaning of it all?
I particularly love this script as when you first see the plot, it sounds preposterous. Even when I explain the film to others, it sounds pretty insane when you map it out. But what Richard Kelly crafted was a beautiful, unique sci-fi/drama/coming of age piece. It encapsulates the angst of teenage spirit perfectly. The film has so many layers, it makes the viewer ask many questions. The non-linear plot timeline, the blurred edges between reality and dreams, and the ominous tone throughout makes this film gripping. The web of characters all interlink, giving each one, even the smaller parts a greater meaning.
My honourable mentions would be: Inception, 500 Days of Summer, Ruby Sparks, Shaun of the Dead and Inside Out.
What are some of yours?
