Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge, above, and Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting.
Can we please talk about Ewan McGregor?!
He has played some pretty varied roles over the years. The most contrasting to me are the heroin addict Mark Renton in Trainspotting (1996) and the love sick Christian in Moulin Rouge (2001).
Both roles were bold, brave choices. In one, he was deeply involved in the grime covered, underbelly of drug addiction and crime, in the other he was a young, bright eyed writer who discovers love, absinthe, music and everything in between.
He managed to portray both depth and evolution to both of these characters, despite how different they are. Look at this photo again - even by appearance, it makes you question is this the same actor?
To me, that's the highest praise an actor could aspire to achieve.
What's your favourite Ewan McGregor role? Which other actors do you think have a similar large range and also the chops to pull it off?
