Devil's Due (2014) REVIEW

This is yet another 'found footage' horror movie that uses hand held personal cameras, CCTV footage and also police tapes apparently to portray the story. Is anyone else sick of these types of movies?! So, the plot revolves around newly married couple Samantha (Allison Miller) and Zachary (Zachary McCall) as they go on their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic.

One night, they are shown to a dingy club recommended by their taxi driver - the night ends in a very hazy blur, with flickers in candles and chanting - and the pair black out. On returning home, they discover she is pregnant and all to soon Zach notices Samantha's increasingly erratic behaviour and wonders if something more sinister is at work, with the the priest concerned as well, could they be parents to something not so sweet and innocent?
Firstly, there are horror cliches here in every turn, I have seen a review that described this as a total rip off of Rosemary's Baby! It becomes very hard to get to know the characters with this found footage style as it never feels insightful, more stifled and mundane. Our characters are missing layers, growth. The acting is not brilliant either, it all feels slightly cheesy. As for the plot, well there are as mentioned cliches, and it feels predictable in many ways. The stand out for me was Sam Anderson (Bernard in Lost) as the Priest - he portrayed a priest very well, conveying true terror - he as was wasted here!

The segments from all sorts of cameras feel convenient - as in CCTV just happens to get set up in their home by an unknown, so that the audience can see a particular conversation better. The creepier bits were brushed over, for example the ritual night itself and when the baby is finally born, the audience isn't shown much and a lot of crucial story seems cut out. Was this a budget issue?

Overall, the film suffers from its script which feels like a generic, poorly paced horror film - full of the usual jumpy moments and plates smashing. I wanted more story, more intrigue and more mythology! Entertaining to a point but not remembrable and fundamentally, not that scary! 4/10
