Still one of the best - High Fidelity (2000) starring John Cusack and Jack Black 🎶
I remember
being totally obsessed with the book, after watching About a Boy, then reading
the book by Nick Hornby. I then turned to the book of High Fidelity - it was
quirky, but honest and about important things in life - to me anyway - like
movies, music and pop culture. This is still true to me today.
Cusack honestly blew me away in this film. Even though he plays a character who could come off as pretentious and pretty pathetic, which does still happen to an extent, he is magical in this role. It's clear that this was a passion project for him. He wanted to play Rob Gordon, he wanted to take the original location of London in the book at set the film in the USA, Chicago to be extract. He is witty and sarcastic; in some ways he is basically just a teenager in this who is still avoiding growing up. In other words, his character is so relatable.
The support cast in the film are great too. Jack Black as his fellow co-worker and general burden of a friend Barry, steals every one of his scenes. His is the highest form of music snob in that he will outright judge a customer to their face on music choices. He is just electric and his usual zany self.
