Unfriended
First things first, I am glad that I didn't watch this at the cinema. Friends who have told told me that hey did, said it made their head hurts. There is a lot going on, lots of reading!
The film is set on a computer screen of teenage girl, Laura. (Therefore this was never going to win best cinematography for any awards.) She is sending iMessages to her boyfriend, then using Skype to talk to her friends. The date just happens to be the anniversary of her school friends Amy's suicide. Suddenly, there is an extra person in the Skype chat that the kids don't know, could it be a ghost? Could it be Amy?!
Things get weirder when Amy's old face book begins messaging Laura...it seems she wants revenge. I am not going to lie, this film dos freak me out. It is very of its time for the Facebook younger generation (my nan would not be able to watch more than one minute of this)
It slowly builds up the tension and once the kids secrets start spilling out , once the anonymous person uses social media to expose everything.... The concept is pretty clever too, especially when they have to play 'I have never' the tensions amps up (however spooky music is in the background, where would that be coming from?!)
The budget must have been tiny as it all takes place in the laptop screen. My main issues are that the characters aren't that fleshed out, but the lead, Laura who's computer screen we are viewing is the most relatable character. We see what she types, the deletes before sending. It's a great insight into her mind.
This movie isn't for everyone, but it's intense and original. The gore is short but well done...When the kids start dropping like flies, it will leave you on the edge of your seat.
And make you turn off your laptop, never to be used again. Waaay better than I excepted it to be. 6/10
