Central Intelligence (2016) REVIEW
When top of his class Calvin (Kevin Hart) prepares to leave school, he is on to of the world- prom king. But for his peer Robbie (Dwayne Johnson) life isn't so great. He's overweight, sweating and on the last day of school, he humiliated by a cruel prank in the school auditorium.
Fast forward 20 years later, Calvin is now a bog standard accountant, where he feels he is wasting his days away.
One day, Robbie contacts Calvin out of the blue, asking to meet and he ends up roping him into very top secret, dangerous situations.
Bob has lost all of his puppy weight and is now as muscly CIA man, who are accusing him of going rogue. He is investigating a deal where the criminals want sati elite codes. But only one accountant can help him hack the bank account, can he persuade Calvin to help him?
On paper, this film shouldn't work. In fact, the actual details of the plot, are very unclear and diluted down. Alliances are altered at a moments noticed and it skims along details so rapidly you tend to miss them.
However, this film instead seems to rightfully focus on it's two polar opposite leads, and their undeniable chemistry. They play against their usual type, Hart, is more reserved (for the most part) and the Rock is the funny one. Even visual gags of him simply wearing a unicorn tshirt work so well. These two are electric together.
The stunts, as expected, are well choreographed and pretty relentless (my favourite being the act taper jump in the postal trolley). Support cast do not get much time but work well with what they have. I almost jumped out of my seat at the apple de of a character played by a beloved actor made famous from a TV show, I won't give it away for you though.
So with a weaker story, this is held up by two charismatic leads who fully commit to their roles and they bring more laughs than you expect, there are even moments of real emotion. I truly hope there is a sequel so we can see a better plot and back stories, but this is a promising comedy, a fun popcorn blockbuster. 7/10
