Suicide Squad (2016) REVIEW

U.S. Intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has a master plan to assemble a team of ruthless, unpredictable criminals to complete covert Black Ops missions in an attempt to save humanity.
The team consists of a whole host of off the wall, deadly personalities including- Deadshot (Will Smith) - the world's greatest assassin who has never missed a shot, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) an insane accomplice and lover (and ex psychiatrist) of the notorious criminal Joker (Jared Leto), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) a ruthless Australian criminal with a lethal, you got it - boomerang, El Diablo, a man who controls fire and Killer Croc, a man with animalistic instaincts and reptilian scales to match - and that's to name a just a few.
Over seeing the crew is Lt. Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) who also just happens to be in love with squad member June Moon who's alter ego is a witch from an ancient world named Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne). It turns out Waller set up their whole romance - just one of her many conniving schemes she has up her sleeve.

Moon struggles to control the Enchantress and Waller's plan to use her as the help crashes down when Enchantress goes rogue - hoping to overpower the world.
The only people who have a hope in hell of stopping her are of course, the squad - if they succeed in the mission, they get 10 years off of their prison sentences, if they lose they die. But are they selected for their skill, or their expendability?

Wow - so that is a vague overview of the plot for this movie and that is the major, unavoidable flaw with this movie - the story. There is too much going on, it tries to establish characters too quickly, and has a very questionable score of 'pop hits' - Guardians anyone?
Ultimately, there is no real emotion driving the film and the stakes are not raised highly enough. The film lacks much needed urgency, how can we invest when nobody on screen does?
So onto the positives - the cast are all on top form. Robbie and Smith - are brilliant, their performances are electric and confident. Other members get much less time to shine due to the film being so stuffed and film suffers dramatically for it. Leto hardly gets 10 minutes but I enjoyed what I saw, I seriously enjoyed. Joker solo film please?
The first zappy act had me hooked, but by the final act it dragged and felt, generic. Plagued by reshoots after BvS, Ayer obviously struggled with the tone. But the film is still fun, the energy is undeniable and the performances save it from total meltdown. Good effort, I just wanted more. 6.5/10
